Driving to Prague by car

The Czech Republic is ideal for car transportation, has a wide network of highways and roads with easily visible road signs. The extensive network of gas stations offers the following fuels: Special, Natural 95 / 98, Diesel and sometimes even LPG. In general the prices are lower than in the EU, but higher than in the USA.
Traffic Regulations
The Czech traffic regulations are almost identical with those in other European countries.
  • The maximum allowed speed in town is 50km/hr.
  • The maximum allowed speed for cars and buses is 90km/hr. on roads and 130km/hr. on motorways
  • Pedestrians at the crossings have an absolute priority
  • No consumption of alcohol is allowed before or during driving (police checks this very often during the night)
  • Seat belts must be fastened during the entire journey
  • Children under 150 cm can not be seated on the front seat
  • Special baby seats are required
  • Use of cellular phones is not allowed while driving, unless with a hands free set
  • When using a highway (motorway) a special fee is required. This fee is paid in a form of a highway (motorway) sticker, which must be affixed to the right corner of the front window of a car. Annual sticker costs 800CZK, monthly 150CZK and ten-day 70CZK for vehicles up to 3500 kg. It can be purchased at the country border, a post office or a gas station.
Parking
While parking, use the guarded car parks (available in all large cities and towns). Make sure that the car is locked and do not leave inside any valuable objects that might draw attention. In Prague use the services of the suburban car parks called Park and Ride (P+R). If you want to go to the center by car, you will have a lot of difficulties to find a place where to stop and when you find one, it will cost you a lot of money. During the day Prague traffic is very heavy and it takes a long time to get where you want. P+R's are located very close to the subway stations on the outskirts of Prague. You park your car there, get in the subway and in a few minutes you are in the center. At present such car parks can be found near Skalka, Zlicin, Nove Butovice, Radlicka, Opatov, Rajska zahrada, Cerny Most and Nadrazi Holesovice subway stations (see map of P+R's). Drivers who use the services of the P+R car parks are provided with an advantageous transfer tickets (20CZK) or 24-hour tickets (50CZK), which can only be obtained, together with the parking ticket, from the ticket machines situated at the car parks.
Car Rental
If you want to visit Czech countryside dotted by beautiful castles and chateaux it may be a good idea to hire a car. There are many hire companies to choose from, but it is advisable to reserve your car well in advance. From the local companies (that are cheaper than the large multinational companies) we would recommend contacting Alimex or ABAcar.. They will be happy to deliver the car for you to the airport or directly to your hotel if requested.
Where to stay
Parking in city centre is scarce and expensive, so if you are comming to Prague with a car it is a good idea to stay in a hotel on the outskirts of Prague (e.g. Hotel Galerie, Pension Victoria). That will save you a lot of money for both the parking and the accommodation. If you prefer to stay in the historic centre, make sure that the hotel has it's own guarded car park. In such case we would highly recommend to stay at Metamorphis **** or Esplanade ***** .
