History
An old legend of the Lesser Town says about this house, which since ancient times has been called the U černého orla Residence, that the graceful bird of prey from the crest brings nothing but happiness and joy. According to the renowned Tomek's topography, in the 14th century there used to stand a palace of Mainz archbishop Ludwig. On one of his trips to the Prague royal court, warriors from his entourage found deep in the Bavarian woods an eagle with its talon stuck in a crevasse of a rock formation. They helped to free it and as recorded in the ancient chronicle whenever they traveled through border forests, a dark silhouette of this bird of prey always appeared above their heads as if to say thank you.
This legend, passed from one generation to another, reflected itself in the crest, a black eagle with its wings open majestically. Through the passing of time, its appearance changed into a two-headed imperial eagle with a crown, a lion on the chest and a sword and a scepter in its talons.
The chequered history of this house was tragically influenced by the fire in 1503, when the house totally burnt down. Nevertheless, it was soon rebuilt at quite considerable cost. On the historic engraving from 1611 it was depicted as a two-storey house with a gable. In this form it survived the ravages of the Thirty Years War.
According to the records in the Lesser Town accommodation book, the house was reconstructed in 1723, extended with another storey, drawing nearer to its appearance of today. According to the historic records, on the ground floor there used to be a tap-room, two closets, a backyard and a wood-shed, and below them there was a cellar with a vaulted ceiling. Later, its newer appearance was adjusted only with some smaller building work on the 2nd and 3rd floors, which took place in 1883.
In the course of the century, the history of this Lesser Town house was connected not only with esteemed citizens, but also Lesser Town craftsmen. So apart from an archbishop or a vice-chamberlain, its walls were lived in by a rope-maker, girdler, furrier, silver-smith and locksmith.
Currently, as if by a wave of a magic wand the house has changed into the U černého orla Residence, offering top quality accommodation and dining services.
